Happy Thursday!
There are no new English assignments today. Look for new assignments in Religion, Science, and Math. Literature Assignment due today--deadline extended to Friday, May 1, 7:00 PM I have previewed some of the responses to the questions for the "Afterword" of Farewell to Manzanar. Several students are struggling to write complete responses. I am extending the deadline and asking all students to revise their answers. Please consider these helpful hints below: 1. As always, please provide quoted and cited text evidence to support your ideas. 2. For Question #3, it is appropriate to include evidence outside the text such as personal observations and anecdotes and news reports. 3. To find the third type of reaction to the book (Question #2), please look at the first paragraph at the top of p. 187 and review the underlined text. 4. Please develop your response to Question #3 thoroughly. I have sent this note (or something similar) to a few of you already. Please revise responses with this in mind. In comparing and contrasting the pandemic quarantine/lockdown/stay-at-home orders and the internment at Manzanar, you could apply what you have learned in social studies class about Constitutional rights. You might think about the influence of the media then and today, the fear and even hysteria created by some news reports, the possibility of propaganda and misinformation (even disinformation), the rush to judgment of certain citizens and leaders. Wakatsuki points out that in 1941 (and again in 2001) U.S. citizens and leaders made quick (and far-reaching) decisions in the name of "necessity" that ended up being wrong. Are we in danger of doing the same thing, or is our situation different? Maybe take some time to talk with your parents and grandparents, to read some local and national news, or to text/chat with classmates about this before revising. You are living through a significant moment in history like Anne Frank and Jeanne Wakatsuki did. Writing Assignment: There is no change in this assignment. The Verbals Quiz at Google Forms is still due today by 7:00 PM. If you have not taken it, please study the video two or more times before doing so. I will be available today between 12:00-2:00 PM for emailed questions. The next post will be on Monday, May 4. Have a great weekend! Happy Wednesday!
The above image of Jeanne Wakatsuki was taken in 2012. Wakatsuki continues to this day to write and to speak about her experiences at Manzanar. Literature Assignments: Use the link below to read the "Afterword" of Farewell to Manzanar. Open a Google doc and label it with your last name (and first initial, if needed) and the words "Manzanar Afterword." Answer the following questions in your Google doc. This is due Thursday, April 30, by 7:00 PM. 1. When did Jeanne and her husband write the Afterword? Why do you think they added it to the book? 2. Jeanne and her husband write that they have seen three types of reactions to the book over the years, three ways that readers bring their own personal histories to it. What are these three reactions? 3. What about you? What is your reaction to the book? Do you fit into any of those categories of reactions? Do you see any connections between our experiences during this pandemic and Wakatsuki's experiences? Explain in thoughtful detail. Writing Assignments: 1. Watch the seven-minute video below to review verbals. I recommend watching it two or three times to study for the quiz. Pause if necessary and read all of the examples. 2. Look back at your exercises for participles, gerunds, and infinitives. 3. Take the 20-point quiz. This is due Thursday, April 30, by 7:00 PM. Happy Tuesday!

Please provide quoted and cited evidence to support your ideas. Explain your ideas in detail. This is due Tuesday, April 28, by 7:00 PM. 1. In several places throughout Chapter 22, Wakatsuki mentions "voices" and "stones." Whose voices? Which stones? What do these represent? What does she mean? How does this use of imagery and symbolism impact the tone of the closing chapter? 2. What is ironic about Wakatsuki's statement on p. 176: "No place for kids"? 3. On p. 177, Wakatsuki uses the expression, "like a needle." What is she comparing to a needle? Why? What does she mean? 4. Wakatsuki ends the chapter--and the entire book--with a flashback. Summarize the flashback and explain what you think her purpose is for ending her memoir this way. 5. Summarize Wakatsuki's emotional reaction to her "farewell" visit to Manzanar, a visit made thirty years after she had moved there as a child. What do you think her final message is to the reader? Support your response. Writing Assignment: Link to the Google document below with notes about Infinitive Phrases. Complete the sentence-composing exercises #1-3.
