Literature Lesson (Maroon Day):
1. We will make flash cards for this week's new vocabulary. The new words come from the source packet for our public library argument. Please access the words at the usual link. The quiz will be on Friday, March 5. 2. We will use the rest of the class period today to work on the Tunes for Bears essay. Please remember that the assignment description and all chapters of the book can be accessed through links at the February 24 blog post. The essay is due at the end of class on Wednesday, March 3. If you are working from home, please feel free to email me if you have questions about your essay. You may also share your document with me if you want to make sure you are on the right track. 1. Classes are shortened today because of STEM activities and Stations of the Cross. 2. We will continue working on the Argumentative Essay over public libraries. If you are working from home, please read Sources A, B, C. Highlight and annotate the sources as you find information to help you determine your position on the prompt. Take notes in the Source Chart or on your own loose leaf. You may also take notes in a Google Doc. 3. Check the blog post on Monday, March 1, for an example of the Source Chart with notes collected during class. You may then check your chart against the notes from class and make any changes. 4. Also, please keep working on your essay over the novel Tunes for Bears to Dance To. This will be due on Wednesday, March 3, by the end of your class period. Literature Assignment (Gold Day)
1. Today we will take Vocabulary Quiz #7. If you are working from home, please email me at the beginning of class to make sure the Google Forms quiz is open for you. You are on the honor system. You may not use any notes, flash cards, or other resources. 2. We will use the rest of the class period to draft the literary analysis essay over our novel Tunes for Bears to Dance To. The assignment, outline, and rubric can be accessed through the links in yesterday's blog post. You can also access all chapters of the book in that post. We will continue to work on the essay during class on Monday, March 1, and Wednesday, March 3. The essay is due by the end of class on March 3. If you are working from home, please feel free to email me with questions as you begin your draft. You may also share your Google Doc draft with me if you need help with a specific section or just want to make sure you are on the right track. Writing Assignment Update As we prepare to write our own argumentative essays, we will watch one more media argument on Wednesday in order to reinforce our understanding of the classic format and components. If you are working from home, use the link below to access the video about the United States Postal Service. Watch and analyze the argument. Use the link to the graphic organizer to access a place to organize your work. Add this to your packet of notes for the other media arguments we have watched. These will be good models to reference as you write your own argument about public libraries. Be prepared to turn these in for a grade when you return to in-person learning. 1. During yesterday's class, we took the ILEARN English Language Arts Practice Test. If you were absent or are working from home, you will need to take this on the first day you return to in-person school. Please be sure to see me at that time. 2. All handouts for our Argumentative Composition were distributed and briefly discussed. The topic is the role of public libraries in our increasingly digital, internet-driven society. Please use the links below to access the Assignment Handout (with an outline and graphic organizer template), the Source Packet, and the Source Chart. If you are working from home, you will need to read these carefully. We will be analyzing each source together in class and filling in the Source Chart together. 1. For our online lesson today, please begin working on both IXL K.4 and K.6. These support our work with analyzing and composing arguments. Please work on these for a maximum of 30 minutes today. If you reach a score of 100, that's great. If you don't, there will be time later this week to finish them. I will check these online at 3:30 PM today for attendance purposes. 2. Please also use some time today to study for tomorrow's vocabulary quiz. The quiz will cover all of the words over "The Interlopers" and the first half of the list from Tunes for Bears to Dance To.
