Congratulations Class of 2020!
As you come to school with your families to clean out your lockers, please remember the following:
I hope you have a wonderful summer break. I am truly grateful for all of the great times we had this school year and for the way you continued to work hard throughout our eLearning. I look forward to a time when we can honor your achievements with a graduation ceremony and celebration. You will always have a home at St. Barnabas. Please know that we are praying for you as you begin your next adventure. Welcome Class of 2021! If you are a 7th-grader, welcome to the 8th-grade English class website. You may access the Summer Reading List at the link below. The blog will be updated occasionally with new posts throughout the summer. I will also check my email throughout the summer in case you have questions about the books. Have a great summer! Happy Wednesday! This Is It: Our Last Assignment!
Hang in there and finish strong! All missing work must be turned in no later than this Friday, May 15, by 7:00 PM. When you and your family come to school between May 18 and 20, please turn in your literature book, turn in any paperbacks you borrowed from me, and pick up your writing portfolio. Remember that the letter you wrote to yourself on the first day of school is in your portfolio. I will continue to be available the rest of this week between 12:00-2:00 PM for emailed questions. Literature Assignment: Please sign in to Actively Learn and read the poem "A Noiseless Patient Spider" by Walt Whitman. Watch the videos linked there and answer the questions. This is due Wednesday, May 13, by 7:00 PM. Writing Assignment: Please link to the two short videos below. These cover two common errors in student compositions: inappropriate shifts in pronoun person and number; inappropriate shifts in verb tense. When finished with the videos, complete IXL 8th-Grade CC.3 and GG.3. If you watch the videos and look at the IXL tutorial, the exercises will go quickly. These are due Wednesday, May 13, by 7:00 PM. All the best to you! Happy Tuesday!
The end of the school year is in sight. Now is the time to finish and submit all missing work. Please complete all assignments no later than Friday, May 15, 7:00 PM. There are no new English assignments today. Look for new assignments in Religion, Science, and Math. I will be available between 12:00-2:00 for emailed questions. As you may know, you and your parents will have an opportunity to sign up for a time to enter the building and take home all personal items in your lockers. Your family should have received access to a Sign-up Genius for Monday, May 18 through Wednesday, May 20. Please plan to take home everything in your locker except for school-issued books. Be ready to turn in your literature textbook (and any paperbacks you borrowed) to my classroom and to pick up your writing portfolio. Welcome back to class!
I hope everyone had a great weekend and a wonderful Mother's Day. Thank you so much, Class of 2020, for the beautiful May Crowning video. It was good to see your smiling faces in the photos! If you watch the videos carefully and take some notes first, the IXL should go quickly. This is due today, Wednesday, May 6, by 7:00 P.M. There are no new English assignments today. Look for new assignments posted in Religion, Science, and Math. Please remember that all work must be turned in by May 15, 2020. If you complete late work, please send me an email with details about the assignment. None of our programs automatically notify me of newly submitted work. Please do not wait until the last minute. I will be available today between 12:00-2:00 for emailed questions. Welcome back to class!
Literature Assignments: Today, we start a new thematic unit entitled, "Nature: Its Dangers and Its Delights." We will be reading selected short stories and poems that highlight the beauty and the mystery of nature. We can look all around us, especially now in the month of May, and appreciate the blooming flowers, blue skies, and budding trees. We feel the warmer temperatures and are grateful for spring and the summer to come. We also know, though, that sometimes the forces of nature are beyond our control and can seem quite overwhelming. Please sign in to Actively Learn and choose the classic short story, "Three Skeleton Key." Read the story and answer the questions. As always, please provide text evidence and detailed analysis for the short-answer questions. The story begins with a video that was provided by the Actively Learn company. You may skip that video. This is due today, Monday, May 4, by 7:00 PM. Writing Assignment: We have learned 10 sentence-composing tools this semester. Our goal has been to create more robust sentences. To reinforce what we have learned, please watch the two short videos below about misplaced and dangling modifiers. Then, complete 9th-grade IXL FF.2 and FF.3. You should recognize that most of the modifiers are participial phrases. This is due today, Monday, May 4, by 7:00 PM. As always, I will be available today from 12:00-2:00 for emailed questions. Please remember that all missing assignments are due no later than May 15, 2020! |

A Classroom Prayer
Holy Spirit, Giver of all good gifts, enter into my mind and heart. Give me the gift of knowledge and the grace to use it wisely. Help me in all my endeavors. Give me perseverance and fortitude. Help my memory, that I may remember what I learn and recall it when necessary. Guide me in the classroom.
O Jesus, You who are the Way, the Truth, and the Life, let me not be deceived by false teaching. Our Lady of Good Studies, pray for me. Amen. Mary, Undoer of Knots,
Pray for Us! A Prayer to Christ, the Divine Teacher
O source of all Wisdom, Christ the Teacher,
You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Teach us to embrace the truths You have revealed to Your Church. Fill our souls with Your Grace that we may love God above all and our neighbors as ourselves. Christ Jesus, friend and Teacher most patient, bless us and teach us. O Light of the world, teach us always to follow You that we should not walk in darkness, but have forever the Light of Life! Amen. Archives
