Thanks for a First Great Week!
Literature Class: During our first week of school, we have discussed our summer reading books and written two short compositions about them. Once you see your grades for these in Jupiter, you can open the Google Docs and read the feedback. Please see me if you have questions. We started our first thematic unit of literature, Unit I. Generations--Conflicts and Legacies, by reading Longfellow's famous poem "Paul Revere's Ride." We completed this assignment in Actively Learn. Writing Class: We have reviewed and are starting to use MLA format for all of our compositions. We updated the "Yes Ma'am" strategy for constructed response items to a "CEA" strategy (Claim, Evidence, Analysis). Be sure to keep both handouts over these lessons to reference throughout the year. This week, we started a unit on Sentence-Composing Tools. Our first tool is the Opening Adjective. IXL HH.1 and HH.2 are assigned this week to help us master the use of adjectives. The Creative Writing Assignment for Opening Adjectives is below.
Independent Reading: The first Independent Reading opportunity begins next week, but you are welcome to find a book now and to start carrying it daily. Our first IR book is free choice fiction, and you will complete a series of Google Forms surveys about your book for accountability. Your book should be a challenging and fun choice that can keep you reading for three-four weeks. Picture Day is August 25! (The above image relates to our choice of sentence starters for the Opening Adjectives Composition. It illustrates Baba Yaga's forest hut. If you look closely, you can see the "hen's feet.") Welcome Class of 2021!
I hope everyone is enjoying these last few days of summer vacation! Summer Reading Info: Please make sure to finish your summer reading book by the first day of school, Tuesday, August 11. We will use our first class periods together to discuss and to write about your book and to share your reactions. Here are some things to think about as you finish your summer reading: 1. Do you admire the main character? Why or why not? 2. Which historical figures are present in the book? What role(s) do they play? 3. Which historical details interest you the most? Why? 4. What has this book taught you about the American Revolutionary War? 5. Is there a hero in your book? Is there a villain? What are their characteristics? 6. What is the theme or life lesson of the book? Why do you think that? Classroom Supplies Info: Please be sure to have the following items each day.
