Walter de la Mare, BiographyWalter de la Mare was born on April 25, 1873, Charlton, Kent, England, and he died on June 22, 1956. He was a British poet and novelist who was well known for ghostly, psychological horror stories. De la Mare was educated at St. Paul’s Cathedral Choir School in London, and from 1890 to 1908 he worked in the London office of Standard Oil. From 1902, however, when his first poetry collection appeared, he devoted himself increasingly to writing. In 1908 he was awarded a pension that allowed him to write full time. He went on to publish many novels, poetry collections, short stories, memoirs, and essays throughout his life. His specialty remained the ability to create a supernatural atmosphere.
